OSRS Magic Training Guide: Level 1 to 99
Jul-11-2025 PST
Why Train Magic?
Magic in OSRS is not just about combat. It offers unique teleports, utility spells, and lucrative money-making opportunities like high-level enchanting and alchemy. It's also essential for certain boss fights, quests, and minigames. With Magic at level 99, you gain access to the powerful Ancient Magicks, Lunar Spells, God Spells and OSRS gold - all invaluable for high-level PVM and PVP.
Getting Started: Levels 1-19
At the very beginning, you'll want to train Magic as quickly and cheaply as possible.
Recommended Method: Wind Strike
Location: Lumbridge Castle basement or other low-level monster spots
Spell: Wind Strike (level 1)
Equipment: Any cheap staff or elemental staff (e.g., staff of air)
Targets: Chickens, cows, goblins
How to train:
Cast Wind Strike repeatedly on low-level monsters. This spell is very cheap and fast to cast, giving decent experience early on. You can also train on chickens to get some early feathers for Fletching or to kill them for feathers.
Once you reach level 5 Magic, start casting Confuse to increase experience per cast slightly, or stick with Wind Strike until you reach level 19.
Levels 19-55: Efficient Mid-Level Training
Once you hit level 19 Magic, you unlock Fire Bolt, one of the fastest training spells that balances cost and experience.
Recommended Method: Fire Bolt on Sand Crabs or Experiments
Spell: Fire Bolt (level 35 required, but can use Fire Strike at 19 if you want)
Targets: Sand Crabs (near Hosidius), Experiments (in the Experiment Cave)
Equipment: Mystic robes, elemental staff or battlestaff to save runes
Why Sand Crabs/Experiments?
These monsters have high hitpoints and low attack, so they are perfect for AFK (away from keyboard) training. They don't attack aggressively or hit hard, so you can safely spam spells on them with little risk.
Runes required per Fire Bolt:
1 Fire rune
3 Air runes
1 Mind rune
To reduce costs, use a Fire Battlestaff which provides infinite fire and air runes.
Additional Tips:
Use the Magic Potion (if you can afford it) to boost your Magic level temporarily for better accuracy and damage.
Use Enchanted Jewelry or Mage Arena robes to increase Magic accuracy.
Levels 55-94: High-Level Training with Fire Wave and High Alchemy
From level 55 onwards, you unlock Fire Wave, one of the best high-level combat spells for Magic training.
Option 1: Combat Training with Fire Wave
Spell: Fire Wave (level 59)
Targets: Sand Crabs, experiments, or safe aggressive monsters
Equipment: Mystic robes, fire battlestaff, and Magic-boosting gear
Fire Wave is a powerful spell that offers high experience per cast but is more rune-intensive:
5 Fire runes
4 Air runes
1 Mind rune
Since Fire Wave uses a lot of runes, it can be costly unless you have a steady GP income or access to cheaper runes.
Option 2: High Level Alchemy (Levels 55+)
High Level Alchemy is a fantastic way to train Magic while making money or breaking even.
Spell: High Level Alchemy (level 55 Magic)
Cost: 1 Nature rune + 5 Fire runes per cast
XP per cast: 65 Magic XP
How to Alch Efficiently:
Alch items that have a high resale value or break even in GP cost.
Popular items include jewelry, weapons, and armor.
The best money-making items vary depending on the current market.
High Alchemy is click-intensive but profitable, making it an excellent alternative to combat training.
Levels 94-99: Blast Furnace and Ancients
Once you reach level 94 Magic, you unlock Ancient Magicks via the Desert Treasure quest.
Option 1: Ancient Magicks
Ancient spells include powerful offensive spells like Ice Barrage and Blood Barrage, which are staples for high-level PVM and PVP.
Best training spot: Ice Barrage can be cast on multi-target monsters or bosses.
XP per cast: 180+ Magic XP for Barrage spells
However, these spells use a ton of runes (death runes, blood runes, soul runes) and are very expensive.
Option 2: Using the Blast Furnace
You can combine Magic training with money-making via High Alchemy on Blast Furnace bars, but this is more niche.
Alternative Methods and Tips
Splashing: Using a high Magic bonus and low defense gear to continuously cast spells that never hit, gaining slow but AFK experience.
Lunar Spells: After level 71 Magic and Lunar Diplomacy, use spells like Vengeance for PVM.
Teleportation: As Magic levels up, unlocking teleports to useful locations can save time training other skills or traveling.
Recommended Gear for Magic Training
Early Levels: Staff of air, elemental staves, wizard robes
Mid Levels: Mystic robes set (for Magic bonus and defense)
High Levels: Ahrim's robes (from Barrows), Infinity robes (for Magic bonus), Ancestral robes (end-game, very expensive)
Weapons: Fire battlestaff or other battlestaff for unlimited runes of air and fire
Accessories: Occult necklace (high Magic damage), Mage's book, or God capes for Magic bonus
Rune Management
Magic training can be very rune-intensive, so managing your rune supply is important:
Use Battlestaffs and staffs that provide unlimited elemental runes.
You can buy OSRS gold in bulk from the Grand Exchange for discounts.
Consider crafting your own runes (Runecrafting skill) to save money.
Use the Magic Imbue spell (Lunar spellbook) to cast certain elemental spells without runes.
Training Magic from 1 to 99 will typically take between 10 to 20 million experience depending on your training method and efficiency. With focused effort and good rune management, 99 Magic is an achievable goal even for mid-level players.
Final Thoughts
Magic training in OSRS is a rewarding journey, combining combat, utility, and money-making. Whether you prefer AFK methods like training on Sand Crabs or active methods like high alchemy, there is a Magic training style for everyone. Balancing cost, speed, and convenience will make your 1-99 Magic grind enjoyable and efficient.
If you want to maximize profits while training, focus on high alchemy at mid to high levels. For pure speed, combat spells like Fire Wave and Ice Barrage are best, though costly. Remember to complete key quests like Desert Treasure to unlock Ancient Magicks, vastly expanding your Magic capabilities.
Good luck, and may your spells never fizzle!
